Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do you square up your quilt backing for your long arm quilter?

A: We were going to do a video on how we go about making sure the backing for a quilt top is square, but we found one on YouTube that is great and explains it really well. So why reinvent the wheel? :) So check out this video for all your questions on how to square up a backing, and why it needs to be done.

Q: How do you make and put binding on your quilt after it has been quilted?

A: We usually like to cut our strips of fabric for the binding at 2 1/4 inches. Some people like to cut theirs at 2 1/2 inches. The fabric is then folded, wrong sides together, and pressed in half making the strip of fabric 1 1/8 inches wide. The raw edge is sewn to either the top or the back, raw edge to raw edge, with 1/4 inch seam. And then the folded edge is flipped to the opposite side and sewed down. Q: Is there a specific kind of batting that we like?

We have found that certain batts work better than others with our machine. We like to use Quilter’s Dream and Hobbs. There are many varieties of each. There is something for everyone, from different kinds of poly to different kinds of cotton, wool, silk, and fusible. We have used batting from BattingSuperSale.com for over a year. Their prices can’t be beat and they carry the brands that we like. You can now order directly from them and have it delivered to your house. Click on this banner and it will take you directly to their site. We do make a small commission off of your order.

Q: How much does it cost to quilt my quilt top?

A: The cost of quilting your quilt is based on how big it is (we charge per square inch), and what kind of quilting you want. The more complex the quilting the higher the price. The best way to get an accurate estimate is to either give us a call, or bring in the quilt and we can talk about all the different options that might work for your quilt.
