We started in 2004 with a dream, and a love for quilting and have continued in this mindset for over 15 years. The name “Quilt for Joy” comes from  not only the joy quilting brings to us but our passion for bringing joy to others. We design, create, and quilt custom quilts, and quilt your quilt tops. We do a variety of styles from traditional to modern.  We are a mother daughter duo who share the love of fabric, sewing, and quilting, as well as spreading joy.

Meet Mary!

Quilting and creating fulfills something deep in my soul. I feel complete and satisfied when I can spend even just a half hour in my sewing room. The fabric comes alive for me, just looking at it, touching it and I can dream up all kinds of possibilities for what it could become. It hasn’t always been this way though. In my teenage years I wouldn’t even consider sewing, or if I did I would become quickly impatient and give up. Sometime in my 20’s I started making my own clothes and then my mother introduced me to quilting, and I quickly became addicted and have been quilting ever since, close to 30 years now! I love the whole process of putting a quilt together - picking out fabric, cutting the pieces, sewing the pieces together, and quilting it. All in all, quilting brings me so much joy!

I am married to a wonderful man and we celebrated our 35th anniversary in August.  We have 3 boys and 1 girl ranging from ages 22-30, and a dog, Rosie. My husband and I enjoy camping, kayaking, wine tasting and seeing our friends. With the kids all grown up, we are immeasurably proud of all their accomplishments and continue to cheer them on from the sidelines.

Meet Barbara!

I was born and grew up in southeast Michigan where I studied piano and sang in choirs.  I took nurses training at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. I started sewing as a teenager and have had a passion for it ever since. I have sewn for my three children and my wonderful husband, even making my daughter’s wedding gown.

In the 1970’s I started to quilt, during these early years I did it all by hand. I bought a Viking Sewing machine to keep up with the demand but quilting a large quilt on a domestic machine was sort of like wrestling, and in my view, not fun. And there was too much quilting to be done, for me to do it all by hand. In 2004, my daughter and I made two large changes to our quilting lives. We bought “Millie” a APQS Millennium Long-arm Machine, and we started this quilting business “Quilt For Joy”.

I mainly do freehand work, I enjoy the freedom and expressivity of freehand work, but that’s not to say the long-arm machine hasn’t made our creativity easier. I have taken many classes from notable longarmers and have grown to love the long-arm machine. I also love to make fabric art quilts.
